In the art classes at Oak Hill Academy each student’s creativity and individual expression is encouraged. We focus on acceptance and experimentation as we open the doors for artistic and personal growth.
While keeping a relaxed and enjoyable setting, students in all grades learn art history; study a minimum of five artists per grade and several art movements while learning various art methods such as ceramics, printmaking, drawing, painting and functional design techniques. We focus on using the Elements of Art (line, color, texture, value, shape, form and space) and the Principles of Design (rhythm and movement, balance, proportion, variety, emphasis, and unity) to enhance our work.
We focus on respect; respect for our own work, the work of others and the art supplies. We learn to set up, clean up, follow directions, use time management and how to positively critique ourselves. We use our past to grow and make each work better than the last.
Students work will always be proudly displayed around the school. In addition to the bulletin boards and display cases all students have the opportunity to enter art contests. We also participate in the annual Monmouth Day Care Center’s scholarship fundraiser. Students create illustrations for select advertisers for a journal to be published in the newspaper. First grade through seventh grade students submit drawings to be selected and included in the next years school calendar.
The most obvious benefit of doing arts and crafts is that the activity foments creativity. This is a useful skill in life, no matter what career kids will end up pursuing. Since kids are inherently curious, arts and crafts provide a way to create something unique out of raw materials and are a positive, constructive way for them to express their thoughts. Arts and crafts also help kids learn how to make choices, as they will have to decide along the way what tools to use, how to decorate their crafts and how to use them once finished. Kids can learn to express their emotions and appreciate the importance of following their creative instinct.
Art education is an integral part of a well rounded 21st century education program that serves to educate the whole child for success in school and beyond. It is hands on, has immediate rewards, focus on positive achievements, develops concrete products, and fosters collaboration. The arts provide many opportunities for students to show off and demonstrate their skills through authentic performance. The arts enable children to grow in confidence and learn how to think positively about themselves and learning. The arts teach that taking small steps; practicing to get better at something, being persistent and patients are important for growth and improvement. Learning an artistic discipline helps young people develop character. Students learn habits, behaviors, and attitudes that are necessary for success in any field of endeavor. (ascd.org)
